Fusion Arts Present "The Apparition": A Captivating Exhibition by Graduates from The Ruskin School of Art MFA Programme

Five graduate artists from The Ruskin School of Art, Master of Fine Art (MFA) program are all set to showcase their thought-provoking works in "The Apparition." The exhibition will take place at Fusion Arts, located at 95 Gloucester Green in Oxford, from 28th to 31st July 2023.

Yulia Kim, Benji Thomas, India Bruckner, Yingfei Lyu, and Lucy Meeber, having recently graduated from the Ruskin School of Art, have united their creative prowess to explore the theme of ritual in their artworks.

The Apparition draws together five artist’s work, using painting, sculpture, and multimedia approaches to explore the idea of ritual, in its myriad forms. Engagement with ritual characterizes not only our own cultural and personal experiences (how we approach death, and what comes after…) but shapes the way we record our own history.

Yulia Kim explores rituals in Korean shamanism, using sambae fabric - a textile traditionally used in funeral rites - as a material link between displaced people in Korea and the grieving process.

Benji Thomas's large-scale paintings capture moments of “the surreal within the real” - attempting to unearth something unexpected in the most drudgingly banal repeated moments.

Benji said ''After seeing all of our work shown together at our recent degree show at the Ruskin, we started to notice common thoughts and attitudes that ran through multiple artists’ work. One that seemed to present itself a little more strongly was the sense of ritual, or ritualistic acts. Funeral rites, repetition, habits. So we wanted to put a show together that explored those relationships a little more deeply. It's interesting to ask the question: 'Why are some of us gravitating towards these ideas without each other's influence?' 'What is it in the world that we're sensing and responding to?''

India Bruckner investigates the potential impact of artificial intelligence on human creativity and culture, opening a window into a parallel world inhabited by a saint who was crushed under the weight of humanity’s knowledge and transformed into a black hole.

Through her meticulously hand-embroidered paintings, Yingfei Lyu skillfully explores the performative aspects of gender and the body, intentionally divorcing the two in order to free the body from the gendered social pressures placed upon it by patriarchal society.

Lucy Meeber's work attempts to hunt interrelationships between the inner self and the languages of the physical and symbolic body through clues.

"The Apparition" promises to be an extraordinary exhibition, showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions that challenge conventions and inspire reflection on the human experience.

Admission to "The Apparition" is free, and all art enthusiasts, critics, and members of the public are warmly invited to witness the brilliance of these emerging artists. Mark your calendars for this unforgettable showcase of contemporary art and join us!!
