The Windrush festival in Oxford kicks off last week as we unveil the Windrush Exhibition at the Fusion Arts Window Galleries in Friar’s Entry, Oxford. This captivating exhibition showcases the remarkable work from three incredible projects: The Caribbean Living Room, Finding Our Way, and the Ankara project. Prepare to be immersed in the rich tapestry of African cultural heritage and the powerful narratives of the Windrush generation.
1.The Caribbean Living Room:
Step back in time and delve into the immersive world of the Caribbean Living Room at 58 Between Towns Road, Cowley. In partnership with the Afrikan Caribbean Kultral Heritage Initiative (ACKHI) and the BK.LUWO group, this reconstruction of a 1960s West Indian front room offers a glimpse into the vibrant lives and experiences of the #windrushgeneration. Join us on this captivating journey to learn, explore, and connect with their incredible stories.
2. Ankara:
Witness the beautiful collaboration between @oxfordbrookesfad , @molalocheconcepts , and London-based printed textile designer @chrisanna_london @amyharrisknits This project has resulted in a mesmerizing collection of printed textiles that narrate the story of Oxford to the people of Lagos, Nigeria.
3. Finding Our Way:
Embark on a research collaboration between @oxford_uni and @oxfordbrookes art foundation students with Unlock the Chains Collective. Discover the African-Caribbean experience in Oxford through mesmerizing performances and envision new ways of creating and embracing archives. One highlight is a series of ‘wearable archives’ crafted by the artist and lecturer, @rachelbarbaresi . These thought-provoking pieces bring together post-war tourist ephemera, contrasting the challenges faced by Oxford’s Windrush generation with the absence of archival records.
Don’t forget to stop by the Window Galleries and let’s honor and embrace the rich cultural heritage that has shaped our society. 🌍✨
