Lost Communications is a captivating live audiovisual performance that explores the intriguing question: "What would birds tell us if we could hear?" 🐦 The artists incorporate their own recordings of birdsong from the UK, Mongolia, Sichuan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
“Lost Communications 失絡之聲,” a live audio-AI-visual performance immersing you in the intricate interplay of light and darkness in nature. An-Ting 安婷 has captured the sounds in the forests and by the river in Mongolia. These are used to create one of seven bird-inspired tracks in Lost Communications.
An-Ting known for her skills in piano and electronic compositions, collaborates with Ian Gallagher, a creative technologist with a background in Theoretical Physics. Together, they create a unique fusion of sound and visuals that challenge conventional perceptions.
An-Ting explains, “In Lost Communications, I take field recordings of birdsongs we collected while on our travels around the UK, Mongolia, Sichuan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and mix them into dark experimental electronic music with droning soundscapes and hard beats.” This ongoing collaboration with Ian explores communication and cognition among non-human living creatures, revealing nature’s symphony and its complex languages, urging humanity to reconnect with the natural world.
Describing the innovative technology behind their performance, An-Ting shares, “Ian focussed on creating visuals that could react in real time to my music during our live performances. He combines Stable Diffusion, Comfy UI and Touch Designer as well as his own code to complement the light and darkness in my music with some of the mind-bending experiences we had while exploring nature’s communications in the Peruvian jungle.”
An-Ting has also written music for “The Dao of Unrepresentative British Chinese Experience (Butterfly Dream)”, which our very own Feng Ho had the pleasure of attending in London. She reflected "Watching this play opened up old wounds for me—the playground racism I experienced growing up in Oxford during the 1980s. The struggles with identity, finding home & belonging. I found myself in tears as the play expressed feelings & experiences that I could never quite articulate...The music ranges from spoken word and melodies, capturing both rage and vulnerability."
