"Save The Last Dance For Me" is an innovative intergenerational initiative led by the Creative Dementia Arts Network (CDAN) in collaboration with Fusion Arts. This project, designed to foster understanding across generations, engaged a diverse group of 40 participants ranging from 10 to 85 years old.
The project aimed to bridge the gap between age groups by incorporating various art forms, including music, creative writing, and visual arts. Participants included primary and secondary school students, creative writing tutors, project leaders, artists, a musician, a poet living with vascular dementia along with his caregiver, as well as care home residents and staff.
"Save The Last Dance For Me" sought to deepen comprehension of old age and dementia among younger individuals while reconnecting older participants with their youthful selves through artistic expression. The sessions for young people were led by creative writing tutors, an artist, and a photographer, while a community musician facilitated reminiscence sessions for the older participants.
The culmination of these intergenerational efforts occurred during a creative activities day, highlighted by a heartwarming tea dance. The collaborative outcome of the project is beautifully documented in a Zine, capturing the rich tapestry of intergenerational experiences shared by the diverse group.
Moving forward, the project will continue to bring young and older individuals living with dementia together, using art, creative writing, and music as mediums to exchange memories and experiences. The participants will showcase their creations in the Zine and contribute to the planning and execution of a dissemination event. This program not only enhances intergenerational understanding of dementia but also provides a platform for sharing, learning, and creativity. Ultimately, "Save The Last Dance For Me" aims to foster social connections, improve wellbeing, and boost self-esteem and confidence, creating a sense of community understanding for all involved.
