Threads of Diaspora!

“In the intricate dance of cross-stitching, it’s all about progress, not perfection. Just like each carefully woven thread contributes to a beautiful piece, every voice, every conversation, every stitch adds to the narrative of Palestine. Let’s keep the conversation alive, the needles moving, and the stories flowing. The strength found in the art of Tatreez is a mirror of the resilience within the Palestinian people.”

Fusion Arts hosted an inspiring event led by Help the World Oxford (@helptheworldoxford) and Threads of Diaspora (@threadsofdiaspora), centered around Palestinian embroidery. 🇵🇸💖 Participants were invited to learn Palestinian Tatreez cross-stitch practice and to stitch a square. The finished squares will be sent off to Threads of Diaspora and added to a larger ‘patchwork of resistance’.

Threads of Diaspora, a Tatreez project born in Edmonton, Alberta, and created by the Canada Palestine Cultural Association (@cpca.edmonton), aims to be ambassadors of peace and unity. Each stitch breathes life into a tradition vital to the identity and resilience of the Palestinian people. Tatreez is a form of resistance, symbolizing unity and the enduring spirit of a culture that has withstood the test of time.

“We envision it traveling from museum to museum and gallery to gallery, sharing the powerful stories of resilience and unity through art. Each individual stitch is like a thread in the tapestry of life, and diversified community. Threads of Diaspora stitches our stories and heritage together, reminding us that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and each part is already magnificent.

We had a wonderful evening immersed in the art of Palestinian Tatreez cross-stitch practice. Many of you began stitching your squares, and these will soon become part of a larger ‘patchwork of resistance’ by Threads of Diaspora. A heartfelt thank you to Ilhaam (@frondsandfeels) for her guidance and to everyone who joined in. 🙏
