Speed of Trust by Rosie McLean

24/11/2023

"Speed of Trust: Sculptural Installation" by Rosie McLean invites contemplation on the delicate balance between choice and chance in shaping our intimate relationships and perceptions. How far are we willing to venture? For how long, for whom, and, crucially, why? Through an immersive blend of glass sculptures, hangings, lighting, soundscapes, and a personal essay, viewers are prompted to delve into the depths of our connections with others and the world around us. The exhibition serves as a journey into the complexities of these connections, exploring the risks and rewards inherent in challenging our preconceived notions and embracing the unfamiliar.

Central to the showcase is a large work-in-progress beaded tapestry and a collection of spectral glass sculptures, meticulously crafted during outdoor ritual bonfires. These sculptures pay homage to the fire festivals of European agricultural communities before the 1800s, symbolizing the cyclical nature of destruction and renewal. This creative process was initiated during Rosie McLean's 2022 residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop and has since evolved through collaboration with artist and somatic practitioner Assia Ghendir. Recordings of Assia's vocals from these collaborative sessions will be integrated into the installation, adding another layer of depth and meaning.

Supported by Arts Council England and a-n, this exhibition offers a thought-provoking exploration of trust, choice, and the intricacies of human connection, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and perceptions within the context of the artwork's immersive environment.
