Before You See The Cart

Sanandha Prabu explores the lives of the Gerobak women of Bandung, Indonesia. Through charcoal portraits on fabric, Prabu challenges us to see the women behind the carts. Rooted in deep research and conversation, this series confronts the politics of visibility - who is seen, and who is denied.

@semuasehat.indo is a grassroots initiative founded by Sanandha Prabu, working to support women and communities through menstrual health education, menstrual hygiene packet distribution, and illustrated colouring books created for homeless children. The project also helps communities access essential resources and care through direct engagement.
This work is rooted in her engagement with the Manusia Gerobak (cart) community—women who push carts across the city collecting waste to earn one or two pounds a day to support herself and her family. Within this context, the project holds emotional complexity that cannot be separated from lived reality.

The body of work emerged directly from this engagement and her research project involving 50 respondents, exploring experiences of harassment, lack of access to safe reproductive healthcare, mental health struggles, and sexual violence.

These findings were translated into a series of drawings and are printed on fabric - an attempt to hold these lived experiences in a slower and more intimate form.
