DJ Tabla was the product of partnership between Shivanova and Pegasus Theatre. As an eight-week music project for young people aged 13-19, DJ Tabla aimed to both create and develop South Asian music and promote its access among the Oxfordshire community.
Professional musicians Prakash Bangalore and DJ Karen O’Brien worked with the young participants to develop their musical and performance skills, using traditional percussion instruments and practical DJing techniques.
The workshops culminated in a spectacular final performance at Pegasus Theatre, where the young people performed alongside established professional musicians to a large audience. This opportunity allowed the participants to share their achievements with their peers and the wider community, which boosted self-confidence and encouraged an open appreciation of the diverse cultures that were represented and channelled through the music created.
