Sensational Books is an ongoing project with the Bodleian Libraries that is curated and led by Prof Emma Smith and Prof Kathryn Rudy. Using the Bodleian's collections, the project explores encounters with books beyond just the notion of reading them, encouraging responses to them across the five senses: sight, sound, taste, smell, touch and beyond.
We are working with nine artists to explore the book as an object engaging the senses:
The work was originally planned to go towards putting on several workshops & an exhibition in the Weston Library in 2020 but was put off due to the pandemic. We have reprised our work with these artists and have had a meeting to discuss next steps / phases for the project in 2022.
“For the first time, researchers have been able to extract the smell from books in the collection of Oxford University's Bodleian Library and bottle it.”
